Crossing borders to enhance our understanding of variation in heritage languages

The ‘Norwegian in America’ project, led by Janne Bondi Johannessen, has provided continued inspiration and access to document study American Norwegian. This contributed a growing body of research on morpho¬syntax and, lesser extent, phonetics-phonology. Using compositional definiteness as an illustration, we show the benefits incorporating these two perspectives analyse variation heritage languages. We strive for holistic approach examples order demonstrate how each grammatical domain interacts. In one case, this leads enriched understanding data, whereas other case highlights explicit need future research. believe that further work includes both morphosyntax phonetics-phonology is fruitful our multiple language domains interact setting.
